Victim shot and killed in strip mall parking lot

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are looking for two gunmen suspected in a Tuesday night killing in west Charlotte.

The shooting happened shortly after 9 p.m. in the parking lot of the Food Lion grocery store in the 4700 block of Tuckaseegee Road.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead on the scene.

Witnesses told police that two suspects, believed to be Latino, fled the scene on foot. Initial police reports indicate that the suspects may have attempted to rob a nearby business that caters to the Latino community.

The victim's identity has not been released.

Driver faces felony charges in fatal wreck

  Montana Nicolay

A 19-year-old driver involved in a deadly overnight crash faces felony charges that include driving while impaired.

Police say Montana Nicolay was behind the wheel of a 2004 Ford Mustang that was traveling northwest on Scaleybark Road around 11:30 p.m. The driver lost control and drove off the right side of the road. The rear of the vehicle struck a utility pole, rolled onto its left and struck a large tree.

Tina Marie Watson 42, a passenger in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene.

When emergency personnel arrived, according to police, Nicolay climbed out of the car and left the scene. Police arrested him a shot distance away. He was taken to Carolinas Medical Center-Main and treated for minor injuries.

Nicolay was charged with driving while impaired, reckless driving, felony hit and run and felony death by motor vehicle.

The Charlotte Observer reports that Nicolay was arrested twice in May on misdemeanor charges of injury to personal property. He also was arrested in January 2010 on drug and concealed weapon charges.

Victim shot at McDonald's restaurant

Police are investigating an overnight shooting at a McDonald’s restaurant at Independence Boulevard and Idlewild Road in east Charlotte.

The shooting happened just before midnight.

One person was taken to a hospital. No information was released concerning the extent of the victim’s injuries.
