Student-athletes from Virginia State University recently strapped on tool belts and picked up hammers to help build a Habitat home.

The effort was a partnership between Tri-Cities Habitat for Humanity, the CIAA and the Lowe’s home-improvement chain.

It was the third time in recent years that a CIAA team has joined with Habitat and Lowe’s to build a house for family in need. Past builds with CIAA schools include: Johnson C. Smith University in 2008; Shaw University and St. Augustine’s College in 2009.

Virginia State President Keith T. Miller said he was honored that the CIAA selected his school.

“We take pride in the fact that our VSU athletes understand the importance of giving back to the community,” he said.
