It's primary day in the Qcity
There are five contested races in today's city council primary, including a citywide primary to nominate four Democrats for the council's at-large seats. Here's what you should know before you head to the polls.
Q. When, where do I vote?
Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m. To find your precinct, visit www.meckboe.org.
Q. What races are on the ballot?
At-large: Incumbent Democrats Patrick Cannon and David Howard face political newcomers Claire Fallon, Beth Pickering and Jarrisha Abraham Rorie. The top four finishers proceed to the general election, where they'll join four Republicans and a Libertarian candidate on the ballot.
District 2: Democratic incumbent James Mitchell faces Cameron Webb Gardner, Gregg Greer and Vivian Mitchell. There is no Republican challenger for the November election.
District 3: Democratic incumbent Warren Turner faces Svend Deal and LaWana Mayfield. The winner meets Republican Ed Toney in November.
District 5: Democrats John Autry, Darrell Bonapart and Alex Hartley Jr. are vying for the seat being vacated by Nancy Carter. The primary winner meets Republican Dennis Peterson in the fall.
District 7: In the city's only Republican primary, incumbent Warren Cooksey faces Jay Privette. There is no Democratic challenger in the general election.
Q. I'm unaffiliated, can I vote?
Yes. Independents can vote in either the Democrat or Republican primary, but not both.
