Plans to hold a four-day, white nationalists conference in Charlotte appears in limbo.

According to the Charlotte Observer, the Sheraton Charlotte Airport Hotel canceled bookings for the conference, which was scheduled for Feb. 4-6 and sponsored by American Renaissance magazine.

The Observer also reported that Charlotte City Council members Patrick Cannon and Warren Turner may have contacted local hotels asking them to deny access to the group. Both deny the allegations.

An official at UNC Charlotte's Center for Professional and Applied Ethics told the Observer that such requests from elected officials, if they occurred, may have violated the group’s First Amendment right to free speech.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, said the Renaissance conferences are attended by "racist 'intellectuals,” “Klansmen,” “neo-Nazis” and “other white supremacists."

The magazine’s website is focused mainly on race but does not openly promote white supremacy.
