Who wants to replace Mel Watt in Congress?
Here’s some news about the battle shaping up to replace Rep. Mel Watt in North Carolina’s 12 congressional district.
- On Wednesday, state senator and former Charlotte City Council member Malcolm Graham announced plans to file a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission. “We must continue to invest in jobs, education and infrastructure to keep our community moving forward," Graham said in a statement. “I am excited about the chance to continue the great work Rep. Watt has done and to make even more progress. We’re taking steps now to lay the framework for the campaign so we can come out of the gate ready to get to work.”
- Someone has launched a Facebook page called “Draft George Battle for Congress.” Battle, you might recall, is general council for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and is the son of the Rev. George Battle Jr., senior bishop of the AME Zion Church. It’s unclear at this time who is behind the page or whether the younger Battle has any interest in running for congress. The Facebook page says it represents a “grassroots movement.” Facebook user Ebony Moore posted this: “Run George!!!! But only if you feel led to do so (and I really hope you feel led to do so)!

Watt, who has represented district 12 since 1992, was nominated by President Barack Obama to be the next director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
