On any given day in the United States, about one out of every eight black men between ages 20 and 29 is in jail or prison, and more than 60 percent of the inmates in U.S. prisons are minorities – disproportionately black and Latino.

On Friday, the Charlotte School of Law held a panel discussion involving some of the city's most prominent lawyers, public officials and activists to discuss the perceived racial inequities in the criminal justice system.

"There is a gap between the law and the way the law is enforced," Adriana Taylor of the Latin American Coalition was quoted as saying in a story published on CharlotteObserver.com.

QUESTION: Is the racial makeup of the prison population the result of a biased system or do minorities commit more crime?
