Last week the National Rifle Association held its annual meeting in the Queen City, and Charlotte celebrated the event, rightly so, as having arrived as an area of destination for large events. I trust that all participants enjoyed our Southern hospitality, which makes me proud of my city.

However, the NRA failed to realize that President Barack Obama has been the best friend in the White House that the NRA has ever known. In spite of the NRA spending $40 million to defeat the Obama campaign and the inflammatory comments made by the organization concerning the president, the president’s record tells a different story. In just over a year in office, President Obama has signed more bills favorable to gun owners than President George W. Bush did in his entire eight years.

For the first time since the attempt on the life of President Ronald Reagan, a billed was signed expanding gun rights, which President Obama did by allowing guns inside our national parks. Many of President Obama's public appearance have witnessed American citizens observing their right to bear arms -- with no opposition coming from the White House -- and this from a nation that has lost three commanders in chief on American soil because of firearms.

It seems to me that the NRA should come out with a public endorsement of President Obama and how, unlike others who gave lip service to supporting the NRA, he actually put the power of his office to work to win gains for the NRA, all while fighting a war on terror at home and abroad.

The record is clear: As long as President Obama is in office, the NRA has a friend, whether its leaders realize it or not. What a waste of $40 million.
