Wynn confirmed to the federal bench
Judge James Wynn Jr. of Raleigh was confirmed late Wednesday to the U.S. 4th Circuit Court of Appeals – 11 years after he was first nominated by former President Bill Clinton.
Wynn, 56, who currently serves on the N.C. Court of Appeals, was one of four judicial nominees approved Wednesday by the U.S. Senate – all by unanimous consent, which means no senator objected and no vote was taken.
Wynn’s initial nomination was blocked by former Sen. Jesse Helms, who died July 4, 2008. He was re-nominated last fall by President Obama.
Wynn will fill a seat on the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals, one step below the U.S. Supreme Court. That seat has been vacant since 1994.
Democrats and the Obama administration has complained in recent weeks that GOP senators were unreasonably slow in approving the president’s judicial nominations.
The Senate took no action of the nomination of Judge Albert Diaz of Charlotte.
