Looking for a few good friends

I did something this week that’s almost unheard of these days.

I began sifting through the Qcitymetro.com Twitter account, weeding out some of the 2,000-plus people who follow us, along with some of the 2,000-plus people we follow.

It’s not that I’m being antisocial; it’s just that trying to keep up with them all had gotten to be too much, like trying to sip from a fire hydrant.

Do I really care about the guy who offers “unfiltered news about Pakistan, Cricket, Squash and field hockey?”

And what about the woman who teaches “prosperity, abundance and success from a metaphysical and spiritual perspective?”

Heck, I’m not sure I even know what that means.

So...

Goodbye, Susan in Las Vegas.

So long, Mr. Parker in Cambridge.

See you later, Tall&Sexy in Newcastle.

OK, I’m keeping Tall&Sexy, but you get my point.

The internet, I believe, should bring us closer, not clutter our lives.

I want Facebook friends and Twitter followers who care about the things we care about, not some person half a continent away looking to sell me marketing services or telling me how to earn free money, as if there were such a thing.

The purpose behind Qcitymetro.com is to build community.

In return, I’ll follow the people who offer content that’s actually meaningful to our endeavor.

What was true when I was younger remains true today: If given the choice between a few good friends and being the life of the party, I’ll take the former any day.
